Signs You May Need Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is the treatment for end-stage knee arthritis. You can determine if you have end-stage arthritis from one of the following symptoms;

  • Inability to walk inside the house even for routine activities like going to the kitchen or the loo.
  • Inability to sleep at night due to pain
  • You have a sensation of knee buckling under you when doing routine activities

Once you have any of the above symptoms, you can rest assured that no amount of tablets or physiotherapy can help you anymore. However, you will benefit immensely from knee replacement surgery.

The other indication for surgery is when you are not able to pursue your hobbies or are not able to maintain an active lifestyle in spite of being fit otherwise. In this case, it becomes a lifestyle surgery – that is a procedure performed to improve one’s lifestyle.

The surgery becomes an emergency when the knee deformity is so severe that you tend to fall, which may result in a fracture, and a fracture is never good for anybody at any age!

Types

Types of Knee Replacement Surgery

When it comes to knee replacement, not all surgeries are the same. Depending on the severity, location of arthritis, previous surgeries, and patient needs, your orthopaedic surgeon may recommend one of the following:

Total Knee Replacement (TKR)

Total Knee Replacement is the most common procedure where the entire knee joint is replaced with metal and plastic components. It’s ideal for patients with severe arthritis affecting all three compartments of the knee (medial, lateral, and patellofemoral), resulting in pain, stiffness, and limited movement.

Partial Knee Replacement

In Partial Knee Replacement, only the damaged part of the knee is replaced, preserving healthy bone and tissue. It's suitable for patients with arthritis limited to a single compartment and who have a good range of motion and stable ligaments.

Revision Knee Replacement

Revision Knee Replacement involves replacing a previously implanted prosthesis that has failed due to infection, loosening, or wear. It's recommended for patients who have ongoing pain or joint instability after their first knee replacement.

Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement

Robotic-Assisted Knee Replacement uses robotic technology for accurate implant positioning based on individual anatomy. It's a good option for patients eligible for total or partial replacement who want enhanced precision and faster recovery.

What is Arthroscopy Surgery

Knee Replacement Surgery

Arthroscopic surgeries are used to treat and diagnose a wide range of conditions. In most cases, the procedure is suggested for:

  • Deformities and injuries of the articular cartilage
  • Debridement & washout of the joints for osteoarthritis
  • Elimination of loose bodies
  • Meniscal tears
  • Synovectomy
  • ACL injury/Anterior cruciate ligament tears
  • PCL injury/Posterior cruciate ligament tears
  • Fixing of tibial plateau fractures with arthroscopic assistance
  • Joint evaluation prior to joint replacement

What Do We Do During Surgery?

Contrary to popular belief, we do not replace the entire knee- the degenerate cartilage is shaved off from the lower end of the thigh bone and the upper end of the shin bone. A prosthesis is then cemented into place in the previously carved bone. A polyethene spacer is implanted between the prosthesis to complete the procedure.

Is the Surgery Painful?

You will not feel any pain during the surgery. You will have one of these two types of anaesthesia:

  • General anaesthesia — This means you will be asleep and unable to feel pain.
  • Regional (spinal or epidural) anaesthesia — Medicine is put into your spine to make you numb below your waist.
  • You will also get a cocktail of medications injected into the knee during the procedure to further alleviate pain and improve healing.
